Code Name :   HKE

Scientific Name :   Merluccius merluccius

European Hake classification: Actinopterygii (class) and Merlucciidae (family).

Hake is one of the most important demersal fish stocks in European waters, and is commonly caught in mixed fisheries throughout the North East Atlantic, along with cod, haddock and whiting.

Hake can live for as much as 20 years, and reach a maximum size of 140 cm and 15kg, but their average size is closer to 45 cm. They reach sexual maturity at around three to four years of age and they are batch spawners. In the Mediterranean, spawning occurs between 100 and 300 m depth, in the Celtic Sea, above 150 m. Up to age 3, juveniles live on muddy bottoms, moving toward the coast at age 3. The Mediterranean stock grows slower than in other areas. The fecundity is reported as 2 to 7 million eggs per female.

Eastern Atlantic: Norway and Iceland, southward to Mauritania. Also in the Mediterranean Sea and along the southern coast of the Black Sea.

Depth range 30 - 1075 m, although they are usually found in waters between 70 and 400 metres in depth, and tend to live close to the seabed in daytime, leaving it to swim up the water column only at night.

Adults feed mainly on fish (small hakes, anchovies, pilchard, herrings, cod fishes, sardines and gadoid species) and squids. The young feed on crustaceans (especially euphausiids and amphipods).

European hake has been an important food for the population of western Europe throughout historic times. Our fishing boats plow Aegean fishing areas in order to supply this specie fresh, frozen-on-board or fresh-frozen after cleaning and cutting in our unit at N. Michaniona. In all circumstances it is significant one to realize that the fishes caught at the sea into the same net, with the same freshness, the smell and taste of the sea accompanies them up to the kitchen, because any treatment  on them occurs within a fraction of time and under the absolutely natural conditions of the fishing boat.
