Scientific Name : Aristeus Antennatus, Penaeus antennatus
It is found in eastern Atlantic waters, from Portugal to the Cape Verde islands. Also, in entire Mediterranean sea.
The species is highly esteemed as food. It is fished by deep-sea trawlers off N.W. Africa and along the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, France, Italy, Malta and Greece.
It is a demersal species, living on muddy bottoms of slopes of continental shelf, in zones close to submarine canyons, in depth range between 100 - 2200 m. Usually moves from depths of 200 m during the night to 800 m during the day, and changes location within the year.
Feeds on small benthic invertebrates mainly crustaceans and polychaetes and also carrion.
As members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric. The mating behavior of the specie is usually indirect sperm transfer.
Maximum total length can reach 220 mm.
The importance of the species as a commercially high value product, forces us to treat the total quantities of our catches on board the ship, in order to maintain its freshness at the top level. And the unique outcome proves what only quick freezing on board is capable to do.
The species is caught in out nets throughout the year, in quantities and sizes that vary depending on the fishing area, the fishing depth and the time of the year. The product is available in two conditions: fresh and as an Aegean Harvest brand (frozen-on-board).
