European Flying Squid
Code Name : SQE
Scientific Name : Todarodes sagittatus
Flying squid classification : Molluscα (phylum), Cephalopoda (order), Ommastrephidae (family).
Marine cephalopod mollusc with elongated, conical and pointed body. Short fins. Very long tentacular club (suckers take up almost all their extension). Dark purple red color.
It is found in eastern Atlantic waters, Mediterranean sea and the Arctic: from Congo Dem Republic to Gibraltar, from Spain and Portugal to Iceland, from Russian Arctic up to Sakha Republic.
It is Oceanic and Benthopelagic. It lives in a wide range of depths between 20 and 2500 m. In the Mediterranean Sea no individual was caught in the hauls taken above a depth of 100 m.
Juveniles feed mainly on fishes while adults consume crustaceans. Migrates to offshore waters during winter; spawning is thought to occur in the continental slope. Members of the class Cephalopoda are gonochoric. Male and female adults usually die shortly after spawning and brooding, respectively.
Embryos hatch into planktonic stage and live for some time before they grow larger and take up a benthic existence as adults.
Common mantle length ranges between 25 and 35 cm, but it can reach up to 1 m in length and 15 kg in weight.
The species is caught in out nets throughout the year, in quantities and sizes that vary depending on the fishing area, the fishing depth and the time of the year. The product is available in three conditions: fresh, as an Aegean Harvest brand (frozen-on-board) and as a Blue Basket brand, which means that it is quick frozen in the factory (fresh-frozen).
